Power4+ is building a national HBCU esports league

Twenty-five HBCUs committed to the competition ahead of its planned February 2027 kickoff.

PlayVS and Urban One announced the Power4+ HBCU Esports League in June 2026. At the time of the announcement, 25 historically Black colleges and universities had committed to participate, including Bowie State, Clark Atlanta, Grambling State and Howard.

The partners described a fee-free, three-year competitive initiative within the PlayVS college ecosystem, with the inaugural season planned for February 2027. That start date is a plan, not a claim that league play has already begun.

The opportunity goes beyond a scoreboard. Competition needs commentators, stream producers, camera operators, designers, editors, marketers, event staff and community managers. Those roles overlap with skills many HBCU students already study.

Independent game studios can learn from the same organizing principle: school identity gives people something to represent. It does not guarantee player engagement, but it can make a well-designed competition easier to understand, share and revisit.
